Martha’s Story
The MediAppS program recently helped an individual receive her medications without interruption. Martha (not her real name) had been working at a steady job when she was laid off due to the downturn in the economy. Her employer continued her insurance but instead of co-pays, she had a deductible for prescriptions of $1,800. this essentially, made them unaffordable for her.
MediAppS helped Martha successfully file applications with the patient assistances programs of the pharmaceutical companies that made her medications. MediAppS also paid for a one month supply of her medications while her patient assistance program (PAP) applications were being processed by the pharmaceutical companies. Because she had a high deductible, the patient assistance programs were willing to provide her medications for free for up to one year.
Martha was eventually called back to work and full benefits were reinstated. With the help of MediAppS, Martha did not have to choose between her medications and paying her mortgage. Martha does not feel she could have done it on her own and asking her help from family/friends when they were going through the same thing was not an option. As a result, she was able to stay healthy, go back to work, and continue to pay her home.
Jack’s Story
Jack, a developmentally disabled man for whom Catholic Charities serves as conservator, recently returned from a trip to Disney World and a NASCAR race. Catholic Charities arranged for him to go with a tour company that specializes in safe trips for people with disabilities. Jack was exhilarated by his experience. Jack met and became friends with several other participants who he enjoyed and with whom he has a lot in common. Now he enjoys the photos that he has of his trip and new friends and he treasures his new memories.
Jack, who lives alone, has no family or friends who would be able to take him on a trip like this. He works hard for his money, everyday, and he budgets his income carefully with the help of Catholic Charities. He is justifiably prod of his self-sufficiency, his job, and the small apartment which his income provides. He saved up for his trip all on his own.
Before becoming a Catholic Charities protected person Jack missed a lot of work because of his drinking and gambling. He frequently underwent alcohol detoxification and his all-night trips to the casino meant no work the next day. His situation deteriorated severely and rapidly. Catholic Charities’ Guardian/Conservator program helped turn his life around. He is now alcohol free and he no longer gambles.
Jack feels much better about himself and is much more happier with his new lifestyle. Jack says “thank you” to Catholic Charities and we say “thank you” to United Way on his behalf.
